It is a very common thing to know that when a woman is pregnant and the womb grows then the woman has a good amount of blood supply that never happens normally. It is said that the blood volume in the body increases up to 60 percent when the fetus grows.
But does that mean that a pregnant woman can donate blood easily? Well the blood donation pregnancy is actually a ‘no’ because the extra blood that is generated during this phase has a particular reason. This happens because; the pregnant mother and the fetus; both need that extra blood that is produced. The blood donation rules thus never permit a pregnant woman to donate blood.
Even if a pregnant woman wants to donate blood, the donation camp will obviously turn them down. There are some medical studies that also say that a woman needs to wait for at least 6 months after the delivery of the baby in order to donate blood.
If a mother who has been pregnant a couple of times want to donate blood then it can put the blood recipients to some risk. This is because; there is a rare but serious complication which is also known as the transfusion related acute lung injury. This can actually help within 6 hours of the transfusion. If that happens then some life threatening situation happens with the lungs. There are some cases when the trigger comes from the anti bodies that are present in the plasma component in the donated blood.
Now this danger of getting affected with this transfusion related acute lung injury (TRALI) mainly comes with the donated plasma. It is the liquid component of the blood that remains after the blood cells are removed. Though it might lack cells the plasma always contains proteins which also includes anti bodies. If the donor has proper red blood cells or RBC then there is a rare chance that it will provoke TRALI. This is because; the RBCs are separated from the plasma and they are cold preserved as some packed RBCs.
So when the question comes that, can a pregnant woman donate plasma; then it is said that blood donation camps hardly approve women to donate plasma who has already become pregnant a multiple times. But they are never discouraged to donate bloods because the PRBCs are said to be safe.
When one is pregnant, though the body produces 50 percent more blood that is very much needed to support the life of the fetus growing inside. So, if one is donating blood during this time; they will definitely put their and their baby’s life in risk by doing this. Also there is a high chance that a woman might turn to an anaemic if they donate blood during pregnancy. This issue can again trigger off some other things like a pre mature birth of the baby and a low body weight baby which is very unhealthy.
That is why; the doctors are strictly against this process.
